Here are some question and answers that, eventually, someone may ask. Or just another thing else to read!
Q: Will you make an image gallery?
A: I don't think I will, given the extra-bandwith it will take, and copyright issues. (Remember, the captures I made, even it may be argued to be used under fair use, it is still not approved by Pink Pineapple and/or Elf.)
Q: Is it Kakyusei or Kakyuusei?
A: The answer would be... both! Since there is no "correct" way to convert Japanese to English, either one works.
Q: Dokaza Café or Dogeza Café?
A: Some sites have it written Dokaza. I followed what is written in the apron. ^_^ However...
Q: Cattleya Flower Shop or Katorea Flower Shop?
A: Cattleya is what is written on the sign. I don't like it, as it sounds like cattle (actually, the name comes from Cattleya, a botanist. Thanks for Kamiyama Kumiko for the tip!). That's why I wrote it as Katorea (the katakana reading of what is written on the apron).
Q: Who is Wakabayashi Ayu? What is Dousokai?
A: Dousoukai is a game, not by Elf but by F&C, which Pink Pineapple did a four episode (OVA?) anime. Dousoukai means class reunion or alumni meeting. Ayu is one of the characters of Dousoukai. She works, too, in a fish shop, that's why I confused her with Maki. I will post a picture as soon as I can.
Q: What is Tokimeki Memorial?
A: Tokimeki Memorial is a game from Konami. In the game, you are a high school student, and meet many girls, including, Shiori, who is your childhood friend. If you manage to impress one of the girls, she may declare her love under the legend tree after graduation, which according to Kirameki High School legend, you will live happily thereafter. From this, three substories have been made, and a two-episode OVA by Studio Pierrot. And, of course, other merchandise is available. There is a second part, Tokimeki Memorial 2, which takes places in the neighbor city of Hibikino. The main character moved when a child, but came back to town by the time for high school. There he meets old friends (including Hikari, your old childhood female friend) and will meet new ones. The legend, this time, is that after graduation, if a girl confess her love and the the bells of Hibikino high School rings, you will live happily thereafter. More about this can be found on the pages mentioned on the links page.
Q: What is Sentimental Graffiti/Journey?
A: Sentimental Graffiti is a SLG game from NEC. One day, you receive a letter asking if you remember "her", however, the letter does not have a name on it. Upon further brainstorming, it makes you remember of 12 girls that you met, from elementary to high school (yes, your alter-ego moved a lot). Any of the twelve girls could have been the one that send the letter, so, the game is to be happy with one of the girls. Sentimental Journey is a twelve episode anime based on the game. Each episode is about one of the girls you met, on how she remembers "you" (the player). Some people say the story is non-continous; I will have to agree, as there is no relationship from one episode to another. Now, given the setting of the game, it is not a problem at all. More about this, please check the pages mentioned on the links page.
Q: What is To Heart?
A: To Heart is a visual novel game. It is about the interaction of "you" (the player) with the different schoolmates. There are two versions of the game, IIRC. One that has adult content and one that does not have. KSS Studios, in association with Aquaplus made an anime based on the game, but without any adult content at all. The story is, IMO, extremely good, as it deals with everyday's life of a high school Japanese student. Some people, however, say the pace of the story is a slow-as-molass. Yes, it is somewhat slow, but who cares whe the story is good? ^_^
Q: Who or what is KSS?
A: KSS Studios is the parent company of Pink Pineapple. Some fans consider KSS to be THE bishoujo powerhouse, as they have released the most well known bishoujo titles, including Ai Tenshi Densetsu Wedding Peach.
Q: Can you make me a copy of your DVDs on video/AVI?
A: No, sorry. Please, support the creators of the anime. I may, however, consider doing an AVI of the intros, endings and eyecatches. But that is as far as I will do.
Q: Can you make me a MP3 of any soundtrack of the CD?
A: No, same as above, please, support the creators of the game/anime.
Q: Wait! Some sites refer to the games/anime you are mentioning as hentai. Is this a hentai site?
A: The short answer is no. The long answer has two parts. The first part deals with the use of the word "hentai": it is wrong. Yes, the literal translation of hentai is pervert, but only as a colloquial use. Japanese industry (game or anime or manga, for that matter) never, and I repeate, never, uses that term to advertise their products. They may warn it has adult content, but that is as far of that they go. The other part deals with piracy. There are few counted legitimate sites that uses the term hentai to describe their product (legimate, of course), because, unfortunately, of the "broad use outside Japan" of the word. It is most likely that the place using the word hentai are dealing with bootleg/pirated material. Please, if you really want to support the industry (anime/manga/games), stay away from them.
Q: So, if the correct word isn't hentai, what is it, then?
A: "Bishoujo", or pretty girls. Yes, the same bishoujo as in Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon. If you look closely, most of the anime/games mentioned here deals with the coming of age of girls. The adult content that some of the anime/game carries is part of the story and not a gratutious sex scene.
Q: Some other bishoujo or similar anime you may want to recommend?
A: There are two problems you may have to consider. The first one is the availability. Most of them is not available in the US, and, as a result, has to be imported. The second one is that many deals with adult content, so caveat emptor. To make it a bit shorter, you might want to consider the following: Pia Carrot he Youkoso! (specially 2DX, which has no adult content so far), Refrain Blue, Doukyuusei (released in the US by SoftCel as End of Summer), Doukyuusei 2, Buttobi CPU (released in the US), Tenkousei, etc.
Q: OK, OK. Besides bishoujo game/anime, what other anime can you recomend?
A: It really depends on what you like. I won't discuss with somebody who thinks Dragon Ball is THE ultimate anime which everybody should watch. If you are more open minded, then, there are suggestions. If you are a fighting anime type of fan, I recommend Garou Densetsu, known in the US as Fatal Fury. If you like toilet humor, you might consider Mahoujin Guru Guru, however, it is available only in Asian market. For detective-type, there is Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo, which, unforunately, is not available in the US. (IMO, Kindaichi is far superior compared to Detective Conan). For shoujo anime, there is Dave's recomendation, Ai Tenshi Densetsu Weeding Peach (again, not available in the US, so far). For mecha, the most popular at the moment seems to be Gundam, yet if you want to look at a obscure one (I mean obscure as most non-Asian people is not aware of it), look for Yamato Takeru, which is losely based on the Japanese Orochi legend. Some other anime worth watching (already available in the US): Perfect Blue, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell.
Note: Kakyuusei, Douykuusei, Doukyuusei 2 and Refrain Blue are copyright of Elf, KSS Studios, and Pink Pineapple. Tokimeki Memorial is copyright of Konami and Studios Pierrot. Pia Carrot he Youkoso is copyright of F&C, KSS Studios and Pink Pineapple. Pia Carrot he Youkoso!! 2DX is copyright of F&C and Beam Entertainment. Sentimental Graffiti is copyright of NEC Interchannel. Sentimental Journey is copyright of NEC Interchannel and Bandai Studios. To Heart is copyright of Leaf, Aquaplus and KSS Studios. All the rest are copyright of their respective owners. Kakyuusei images are being used without permission.
